In a survey completed by music administrators statewide, the following skills were listed
as being vital for all beginning music teachers:

All beginning music educators should...

        Possess a philosophy of music education and a passion for teaching children
          and music.
     
   Teach to State and Local standards and curriculum using varied assessment techniques.
        Relate and communicate with students, parents and staff with flexibility.
        Utilize technology including sequencing and the internet.
        Possess highly developed musical, social and emotional skill.
        Writing sequential lessons effectively and planning short and long range outcomes.

 

All beginning ensemble teachers should be able to...

        Perform at a NYSSMA Level 6 on a major instrument or voice and Level 2-4
          on minor instruments.
     
   Conduct with clear patterns from full or condensed scores.
        Provide rehearsal organization, discipline and management with clear instructions.
        Program balanced and appropriate music.
        Detect, anticipate and prevent pitch and rhythm errors.
        Organize inventory, equipment, concerts, lessons, etc.

        Have a working knowledge of ensemble, solo and chamber literature.
        Assemble, repair and maintain all instruments.
